Pittsburg
& Midway Coal Company, a subsidiary of Chevron/Texaco, is
the owner and operator of the Kemmerer Mine. This mine is not
only the largest open pit coal mine in Wyoming, but also the largest
in the United States. It was also the first surface mine in this
area. One of the many old underground mines was located where
this mine is today. The gigantic size of the equipment used, be
it trucks, shovels, front end loaders, or dozers, makes people--even
people in semi-trucks--feel really insignificant.
