A Historical First
In
1902, James Cash Penny arrived in Kemmerer, Wyoming, and opened
a store called the “ Golden Rule”. His philosophy
was “cash only and do unto others as you would have them
do to you”. JC Penny was going up against two “company”
stores that were part of the business of the local coal companies.
Mr. Penny’s business was a success, and within 1911 and
1912, he had thirty-four stores opened around the county. His
business thrived and became the J.C. Penny Company. The mother
store is still open in Kemmerer.
Also
available to the public is the Penny home, a six-room cottage
that is a National Historic Landmark. It is open to the public
during the spring and summer.
